The Best Way to Clean Garbage Disposal

The garburators, also known as garbage disposals, help us get rid of unwanted food waste. If you don’t have one at home, it’s time you check the best garbage disposal review and get one because it is indeed an excellent kitchen asset that can make your life a lot easier. As you probably know, food particles that are left to sit in the disposal provide the perfect moist home for bacteria to grow. Over time, this growth of bacteria creates a bad smell. Even though they are normally self-cleaning, these kitchen appliances need a little attention from time to time. Here are a few ways how to maintain your garbage disposal in a good condition.

Think about using ice cubes

Putting ice cubes in your disposal is a great way to remove food particles and debris that has attached itself to the grinding elements. Additionally, you can also pour some baking soda. While ice cubes will clean the disposal grinding components, baking soda will help you get rid of unpleasant smells. However, you just have to turn on the disposal, run some cold water and allow the ice cubes and baking soda to be crushed by the blades. An alternative to this method is to make freeze some vinegar into ice cubes and crush them in the appliance instead.

Remove bad odors with citrus fruit

If your kitchen appliance has an unpleasant smell, you can neutralize it by grinding a citrus fruit, such as lemons or oranges. This process is extremely simple: you just have to cut the fruit into wedges, turn the unit on and put the wedges in it along with a stream of cool water. While the citrus will provide a fresh smell, the fruit rinds will clean the grind components. However, you can also use something harder than a citrus fruit. As such, you can cut a peach in half and throw it in the pit. The hard peach pit will dislodge any food waste that it is in the disposal.

Rinse with a little bleach

As you already know bleach is extremely effective at killing germs and bacteria and will quickly freshen up your unit. However, you shouldn’t use too much solution because it can harden the grease in the disposal, making it difficult to remove. Therefore, it’s recommended to dilute a tablespoon of bleach in a gallon of water and pour the liquid into the unit. Allow it sit there for a few minutes, then turn the hot water and leave it running for a minute or two in order to flush away the bleach.
