Picture Inspiration, Week 6

Welcome back to my weekly coverage of my work with the photography workshop, Picture Inspiration with Tracey Clark of Shutter Sisters. After several weeks investigating the various interpretations of rhythm, this week we turned towards reflections. We were challenged to not only capture a reflection but also the object which was being reflected.

I don't know why but I found this prompt to be quite difficult. My instinct is to make an object the primary focus and the reflection a secondary element. So to compose an image where the reflection was equally important felt very unnatural to me. I tried for a few days to keep my eyes open for a "found" image that would be suitable but nothing seemed quite right. So to my "studio" (see here and here) I went.

Picture Inspiration, Week 5

Big Picture ClassesThis week's Picture Inspiration assignment allowed us - forced us! - to wallow in a basic compositional tactic: leading lines, where an element within the photo traces a diagonal line that draws the eye across the frame. We were charged to utilize this idea, along with visual repetition and shallow depth of field to make another representation of rhythm.

Picture Inspiration, Week 4

Big Picture Classes

A quick post about this week's submissions for my Picture Inspiration workshop.  The prompt this week continues on the theme of rhythm. This week we are charged with finding rhythm in stacks of objects and actively participating in stying our images for the best effect.

My submissions are the result of my trip to the Achitectural Digest Home Show today, specifically from the booth of DVF Home.  I'll report more on my finding in that booth and throughout the show later this week. in the meantime, here are a few images I captured for this week's prompt.

One Little Word | Captured, Week 11

This weekend, I packed up the kids and the three of us headed out for a long weekend away. It was a chance for my children to spend time with their two cousins and for me to get some quality time with one of my sisters, Tania. For my poor brother-in-law, it just meant being displaced from his bedroom, his bathroom and his car. As expected, we had a wonderful time all together but what I was particularly struck by was how far we had come in the years since we both made our big moves.

Picture Inspiration, Week 2

Welcome back. This week marks Week 2 of Picture Inspiration with Tracey Clark. As a reminder, I will be posting about my submissions for each of the 52 weekly prompts.

WEEK 2: Finding a Little Rhythm
This week is all about interpreting the word "rhythm," the first in what appears will be a series of prompts focused on this word (and loosely tied to Tracey's own One Little Word, a project about which we have written about here and here). We were encouraged to break down the definition of rhythm and visually interpret it. To start, the definition:

a harmonious sequence or pattern of masses alternating with voids, of light alternating with shade, of alternating colors, etc.

When I read this, it immediately resonated with me. I have always been attracted to architectural and structural details and  variations in textures. I knew I would have at least a few images in my archives to fit the bill. Don't get me wrong, I have every intention of making a fresh and new image this week, but thought in the meantime, I'd just share these two.
