Watercolor's Making a Comeback

Watercolor has always been one of my favorite mediums to use when painting. Lately there has been a flutter of watercolor paintings gracing the pages of magazines and blogs as well as in ads and store decor. Anthropologie, Rue Magazine, Kate Spade and Matchbook Magazine are a few who have incorporated this refined medium into their graphics.

Book Review: The Perfectly Imperfect Home

Design books are high on my list of must reads right now. Mae & I have begun a class in interior design and the main book we’ve been assigned is quite dry. So it was a pleasure to have my readings punctuated with the colorful and easy-to-read book, The Perfectly Imperfect Home by Deborah Needleman.

Many of you may know Deborah as the former founding editor of domino Magazine and current editor in chief at the Wall Street Journal. She has infused the pages of The Perfectly Imperfect Home with her straight-forward advice that rattles around in your head long after you’ve put the book down. Additionally the text is coupled with the beautiful illustrations by Virginia Johnson whose watercolor pictures have led me down the path of complete obsession with the medium.

Creating a Color Palette

Choosing colors for your home is one of the hardest things to do. Whether it is paint for your walls or a color scheme to bring a room together, color is one of the biggest challenges many face. In a quest for finding a perfect color combination, one naturally gravitates toward attractive objects and photographs.

If you are one of those people who finds a photograph that makes you weak in the knees, then there is a simple way to create a color palette from that picture. Websites like Design Seeds and others like it have made these color palettes main stream on Pinterest. There is even a blog that offers a free template you can download in order to create a color palette.

Renovating My Kitchen

It's no secret I live in an old house. It was built in 1917 and renovated in 1936; there has been little done to it structurally since that time except "internal" updates (wiring, plumbing, AC, etc). What once was a tiny square 10' x 10' kitchen with a butlers pantry has been combined into a "sprawling" 190 sq. foot L-shaped kitchen. It has character…

Moving into the house, my husband and I knew the kitchen needed to be renovated. But limited time and other house priorities have kept us from paying attention to the much neglected and oft-used room. We inherited old appliances that work but not so well (no energy efficiency here!). There is little storage space and no pantry. Plus the room has four windows, three doors, a staircase, an exposed radiator and two posts. It is also the main entry we use to get into our home about 10 times per day. Just call it the workhorse of the house.

But wait, there's more! It is also currently not set up in the classic kitchen work triangle layout. This makes for difficult navigating while cooking and entertaining.

We're Curating a Collection at Joss & Main

We are so excited to be partnering with the chic home design, flash sale website, Joss & Main. The curators collection will go live on December 6 at 9 p.m. ET* and is all about "Channeling Your Inner Kid." We wanted to show the fun and unexpected ways you can use whimsy and imagination in a home both on a small and oversized scale: clean & functional lines, creative pieces and just plain fun! Including pops of color was of the utmost importance too and reminded us of the fun Bleep color trend chosen by Mixx Magazine at 100% Design!

We invite you to become a member of Joss & Main by using this invite below (there is a waiting list, so use this invitation link to become a member today). Then they'll be sure to remind you when our sale goes live (Tuesday, 12/6) too because you'll get their daily emails about every fabulous sale they have.
