Picture Inspiration, Week 2

Welcome back. This week marks Week 2 of Picture Inspiration with Tracey Clark. As a reminder, I will be posting about my submissions for each of the 52 weekly prompts.

WEEK 2: Finding a Little Rhythm
This week is all about interpreting the word "rhythm," the first in what appears will be a series of prompts focused on this word (and loosely tied to Tracey's own One Little Word, a project about which we have written about here and here). We were encouraged to break down the definition of rhythm and visually interpret it. To start, the definition:

a harmonious sequence or pattern of masses alternating with voids, of light alternating with shade, of alternating colors, etc.

When I read this, it immediately resonated with me. I have always been attracted to architectural and structural details and  variations in textures. I knew I would have at least a few images in my archives to fit the bill. Don't get me wrong, I have every intention of making a fresh and new image this week, but thought in the meantime, I'd just share these two.

Study of Light (II)

"harmonious sequence"   "light alternating with shade"   "alternating colors"
All these components of the definition of rhythm are present in these photos. And these images very strongly represent the sort of photographs that I just love to take: order, lines, symmetry, detail. To me, they are a reflection my training as a scientist and my obsession with efficiency. (Boy, that sure makes me sound like the life of the party!) As much as I love a wonderful photo of my family or friends, it's photos of inanimate objects that come easiest to me. On a recent trip to Taiwan, I must have spent as much time taking photos of things as I did taking photos of our family adventures. But I recognize these tendencies of mine so I have resolved to myself to get batter about taking photos of people. I'd really like to get better at representing more spontaneity and energy and whimsy in my work.

So if life doesn't get in the way, I'll be posting again before week 3 with a fresh and new image to share.  until then, have a great weekend!
