Picture Winter, Day 1: Day for Rest
Saturday, January 1, 2011 Today marks the start of a new year. It also marks the first day of the photography workshop, Picture Winter, by Tracey Clark of the wonderful Shutter Sisters. (If you don’t already have their book, Expressive Photography, do pick up a copy not only for the eye candy but also for the wonderful teachings and inspiration.) In this e-class, Tracey delivers daily prompts meant to inspire the participants into capturing the wonders of the season and “act as a catalyst to creatively jumpstart the brand new year.”
I signed on for this 30-day workshop to push myself to take photographs every day and to help me see the potential in everyday life to be memorable moments. Today, I’d like to share with you what the Day for Rest meant to me and how I captured the image.

I spent New Year’s with two other families at my sister’s place in New York. None of my children made it until midnight and only one of my sister’s girls did. Though I hoped that the children would let us sleep in after a long night, it was not to be. They were up early and my dear husband got up with them so that the rest of the adults could rest for just a little while longer.
This image is what I saw when I finally got up. My two nieces (one with severe bed head) in the glowing and warm morning light of the new year. It took me a few tries to get the exposure and back lighting just right but I’m glad I kept at it. I am really pleased with the final product. Our Day for Rest was spent just like this: recuperating from the holidays with family entertainment and play time. On Monday we will resume our regularly scheduled programming but, for now, and for another day longer, we will revel in the wake of the winter holidays.

Love the back lighting through the bed-head! I also love the warmth and colors of the room. The rug, the ottoman, it seems like such a cozy environment. I'm here from Picture Winter and am so excited about the coming month!
